Autism Forum - March 17
Last year I sponsored a forum on autism, and based on its success I'll be doing that again this year with Rep. Coladipietro. The focus of the talks will be on education and options in the education system. The forum will be on March 17 at 7:00 pm at the Wheaton Community Center.

It's one thing to watch the scene of campus shooting in a distant state, like last year at Virginia Tech. It's a very different feeling when the scene is not just in my state, but at the school I've been a part of for the last 20 years.
Even though I was in Springfield at the time of the shooting, I could imagine the horror felt in that classroom. I've walked by Cole Hall countless times, but in the future I'll pass it with knowledge of the tragic loss of life. I've taught in other lecture halls at NIU, but in the future I'll teach with heightened knowledge that my students are faced with concerns for safety as well as learning.
For now, my thoughts and prayers go to my colleagues at NIU, the staff, students, and community, and most of all for the victims and their families. It will take time and effort to heal and restore NIU to its proud mission of education. It was my privilege to do a small part by leading a moment of silence on Friday in the Illinois House of Representative.

Late last year the US Congress surprised Fermilab by slashing $52 million from the President's budget request. Fermilab is not just one of the top research centers in the US, it's also a major employer in the area. The lab contributes to the economy through its own operations, through its employees, and from the many spin-off businesses that have happened through the years. By introducing HJR82 Mike Fortner is working to get the State of Illinois on record to support a restoration of Fermilab's funds.

The new year brings a new round of proposed legislation. The State Journal-Register in Springfield took note of a new bill, and thought it worthy of a story. HB4216 was filed last week and would create a commission to act as the state's point group with expertise to coordinate big federal science projects that may come to Illinois.

Legislation and committee work
Next week the House will return to Springfield to take up the linked questions of mass transit, capital improvements, and whether casinos are the answer to any of this. As I posted a couple of months ago I have been working on an alternative idea to fund mass transit. I filed a bill incorporating those ideas two weeks ago as HB4185. A bullet point synopsis follows.

Legislation and committee work
One of the big issues this year has been an attempt to address mass transit in northeastern Illinois. A funding crisis has been looming for some time, and it came into focus with the Auditor General's report in March. This morning I was at the John Noel DuPage Transit Discovery conference, and as expected the funding question was raised. The House Mass Transit Committee has a hearing scheduled for this coming Tuesday, and after this morning's meeting I wanted to get some funding thoughts out in advance of the hearing.
